Looking for dental bridges in central London? Then come to Covent Garden Dental Spa.

A bridge is a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth. A bridge is a fixed restoration which uses the adjacent teeth on either side of the gap to anchor the restoration. The adjacent teeth are referred to as abutment teeth. The bridge has a crown on each of the abutment teeth and attached to the crowns is a pontic which is the false tooth replacing the missing the tooth and this closing the gap.

There are 3 main types of bridges offered at the Covent Garden Dental Spa, which can be offered to any of our patients looking for dental bridges in central London:

1. Conventional Bridge

A bridge is made by reducing the size of the abutment teeth. The amount of reduction the dentist will do on the abutment teeth will depend on the location of the teeth and the type of bridge which is going to be made. The tooth structure removed on the abutment teeth will be replaced by the restorative material being used to make the bridge. The restorative material is used to restore the size and shape and of the teeth. The false tooth will be anchored onto the two abutment teeth, thus closing the gap and restoring function.

These conventional bridges can be made of 3 types of material:
  • All ceramic metal-free Cosmetic bridges: these are all porcelain bridges and no metal is needed to reinforce the bridge.
  • A porcelain fused to metal bridge
  • Gold

2. Resin Bonded Bridges or Maryland Bridges

If the abutment teeth are nice healthy teeth, then the tooth reduction required for conventional bridges would not be favorable. For this reason, we offer the option of a resin bonded bridge which requires very minimal tooth reduction, if any at all. These bridges use metal or porcelain wings anchoring the pontic by fusing the wings to the abutments using a resin material.

3. Cantilever Bridges

This option is used if there are only teeth on one side of the gap to be restored, i.e., there is only one abutment. The false tooth is anchored to one or more abutments on one side, and has not attachment on the other side. This option is only advisable in an area of low stress.

How is a bridge made?

Two appointments are need:

Appointment 1

This is the appointment where the dentist makes the necessary reductions to the abutment teeth. After the reduction is carried out, an impression using a putty material is taken. This impression is sent to the laboratory who make the bridge using the information supplied by the impression. The abutment teeth will be covered up using a temporary bridge to protect the teeth while the bridge is being made. The dentist will check what colour your teeth are to make sure the new bridge matches the rest of your teeth.

Appointment 2

This appointment is normally 2 weeks after the first appointment depending on how long the laboratory takes to turn the work around. At this appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary bridge and try in the permanent bridge which the laboratory will have made. If the bridge has a good fit and you are happy with the look and feel of the bridge, it will be cemented with resin cement. The dentist will ensure that you are able to clean the bridge well, and that you are able to bite normally as before. Once in a while, repeat appointments are required to ensure a good fit.

How long does a bridge last?

If you clean your bridge well and attend for regular check and hygiene sessions, we normally say it will last up to 10-15 years.

What are advantages of a bridge?

  • They replace missing teeth thus restoring aesthetics and function
  • The treatment only requires two appointments (sometimes onr or two more), 2 weeks apart
  • They have a good life span 10-15 years

What are disadvantages of a bridge?

  • Preparation for a bridge involves reduction of teeth on either side of the gap, and thus compromises the structure of these teeth
