Is prevention better than cure? Private Dentist in Covent Garden, Holborn & King’s Cross

Tooth decay is now the leading cause of hospital admission among children aged 5–9 in England (reference). In 2024/25, 21,162 children aged 5 to 9 were hospitalised for tooth decay—65% higher than the next most common cause, acute tonsillitis (13,667 admissions)(reference).

Dr Charlotte Eckhardt, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS England), warned these figures represent a “public health emergency.” She said:

“Every child in hospital with tooth decay is proof that prevention has failed. We must act now to spare children needless pain, time off school, and avoidable surgery.”

Book your child’s dental check-up today and let’s prevent decay before it gets serious.

Why Check-Ups Matter

Regular dental visits for children allow us to:

  • Detect early lesions before they worsen
  • Apply fluoride varnish or fissure sealants
  • Coach children and parents on diet, brushing technique, and sugar exposure
  • Monitor growth, alignment, and habits

At Covent Garden Dental Spa, we aim to make children’s visits comfortable, positive, and preventive.

Frequently asked questions

Do baby teeth matter?

Yes — they help with eating, speech, space for adult teeth, and protecting future smile health.

How often should children visit the dentist?

Usually every 6–12 months, but children at higher risk may need more frequent reviews.

Are dental X-rays safe for kids?

Yes. We use modern digital systems with very low radiation, and only when clinically justified.

Is fluoride dangerous for my child?

No, when used in the correct amounts. Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent decay. Issues only arise with excessive, prolonged use.

What is the correct fluoride dose in children’s toothpaste?
  • Under 3: a tiny smear of ~1000 ppm
  • Ages 3–6: pea-sized dose, ~1000–1,500 ppm
  • Ages 7+: same pea-sized amount at ~1,350–1,500 ppm

Always supervise brushing until about age 7 to minimise swallowing.

What do I do if my child refuses to let me brush their teeth?
  • Try brushing just one tooth or one side first — small wins build confidence
  • Let them hold the brush after you do it, or use a finger brush/cleaner
  • Make it fun — sing a song, use apps, timers, games
  • Brush together — children love copying
  • Try brushing when they’re relaxed (after bath, before a favourite show)
  • Avoid power struggles — pause and try again later
  • Use a child-friendly fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush
  • If it remains difficult, we can help with behaviour techniques during a consultation
