As temperatures rise across the UK, many of us focus on staying cool and avoiding heat exhaustion. However, one often-overlooked consequence of hot weather is dehydration—and the impact it can have on your oral health.

Your mouth relies on a constant supply of saliva to protect your teeth, gums and soft tissues. During a heatwave, increased sweating can leave you dehydrated, reducing saliva production and making your mouth more vulnerable to tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.

In this guide, I will share

  1. why hydration matters for your smile
  2. 5 simple ways to stay hydrated during a heatwave,
  3. whether electrolyte drinks are a friend or foe for your teeth.

Heatwave Warning: Don't Ignore the Signs of Dehydration

During periods of hot weather, the NHS advises people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day, and watch for signs of dehydration.

Older adults, children, people taking certain medications, and those exercising outdoors may be particularly vulnerable during a heatwave.

Common signs of dehydration include:

  • Dry or sticky mouth
  • Cracked lips
  • Bad breath
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Dark yellow urine

If you experience severe dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat or symptoms of heat exhaustion, seek medical advice promptly.

Why Hydration Matters for Your Mouth

Saliva is one of your body’s most important natural defences.

It helps to:

  • Wash away food particles and bacteria
  • Neutralise harmful acids that cause tooth decay
  • Protect your gums from infection
  • Prevent bad breath
  • Aid chewing, swallowing and digestion

When you’re dehydrated, saliva production decreases, increasing your risk of:

  • Dry mouth
  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Oral infections
  • Persistent bad breath

A dry mouth isn’t simply uncomfortable—it can significantly affect your long-term oral health.

5 Best Ways to Stay Hydrated During a Heatwave

1. Drink Water Little and Often

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty.

By the time thirst develops, you may already be mildly dehydrated. Keep a reusable water bottle nearby and sip water regularly throughout the day.

Adding slices of lemon, cucumber, mint or berries can make water more enjoyable without adding refined sugar.

2. Eat Your Water

Many fruits and vegetables contain surprisingly high amounts of water.

Excellent hydrating foods include:

  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Tomatoes
  • Lettuce
  • Oranges

These foods also provide vitamins and antioxidants that support healthy gums and overall wellbeing.

3. Limit Sugary and Fizzy Drinks

An ice-cold fizzy drink may seem refreshing, but many soft drinks contain high levels of sugar and acid.

These can:

  • Increase the risk of tooth decay
  • Contribute to enamel erosion
  • Leave your mouth feeling even drier afterwards

Water remains the gold standard for hydration.

If you do enjoy a sugary or acidic drink, consume it with a meal and rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

4. Be Mindful of Alcohol and Caffeine

Coffee, tea, energy drinks and alcohol can contribute to dehydration when consumed in excess.

Try alternating these drinks with water, particularly if you’re spending time outdoors, exercising, cycling or gardening.

A simple rule is to have a glass of water alongside every alcoholic drink.

5. Support Saliva Production

If your mouth feels dry during hot weather:

  • Sip water regularly
  • Chew sugar-free gum
  • Avoid smoking and vaping
  • Use an alcohol-free mouthwash
  • Stay hydrated before, during and after exercise

Keeping saliva flowing is one of the simplest ways to protect your teeth and gums.

Electrolytes During a Heatwave: Friend or Foe?

Electrolytes have become increasingly popular, and for good reason.

Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium that help regulate fluid balance, muscle function and nerve function.

When you sweat, you lose both water and electrolytes.

For most people, water is sufficient for everyday hydration. However, during a heatwave, prolonged exercise, cycling, hiking, gardening or heavy sweating may increase your need for electrolyte replacement.

One of my personal favourites is Hunter & Gather Restore, which provides electrolytes without added sugars and unnecessary ingredients.

So, are electrolytes a friend or a foe?

The answer is: both.

5 Benefits of Electrolytes

1. Replace Minerals Lost Through Sweat

Electrolytes help restore important minerals lost during hot weather and exercise.

2. Improve Hydration

They can help your body absorb and retain fluids more effectively than water alone.

3. Reduce Fatigue

Maintaining electrolyte balance can help prevent tiredness associated with dehydration.

4. Support Muscle Function

Electrolytes play an important role in muscle contraction and may help reduce cramping.

5. Aid Recovery

They can be particularly beneficial after long walks, bike rides, gym sessions or outdoor activities.

5 Potential Downsides of Electrolytes

1. They’re Not Always Necessary

For light daily activity, plain water is usually sufficient.

2. Some Products Contain Sugar

Many sports drinks contain large amounts of sugar, increasing the risk of tooth decay.

3. Some Are Acidic

Frequent exposure to acidic drinks can contribute to enamel erosion.

4. Easy to Overuse

More is not always better. Excessive electrolyte supplementation is unnecessary for most healthy individuals.

5. They Don’t Replace Water

Electrolytes should complement hydration—not replace adequate water intake.

Protecting Your Teeth When Drinking Electrolytes

If you choose to use electrolyte drinks:

  • Drink them within a short period rather than sipping throughout the day
  • Rinse your mouth with water afterwards
  • Wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth
  • Choose low-sugar or sugar-free options where possible

Book a dental health assessment or hygiene appointment today and keep your smile healthy throughout the summer.
