Written by Dr Roop

Hello, I’m Dr Roop, a dentist with a special interest in TMJ and jaw joint disorders. TMJ care is something I am deeply passionate about because I see every day how jaw pain, headaches and facial tension can quietly affect your confidence, comfort and quality of life.

Over the years, I have helped many patients achieve meaningful and lasting TMJ pain relief using a holistic and patient centred approach. I focus on you as a whole person, not just your symptoms, and I am proud of the results we have achieved so far. This blog series is designed to help you understand TMJ clearly, calmly and without overwhelm.

What Is TMJ and What Is TMD

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. TMD stands for temporomandibular disorders, which is the clinical term used to describe a group of conditions affecting the jaw joint, the surrounding muscles and the way the jaw functions.

In simple terms, TMJ is the joint itself, and TMD is the condition that occurs when something is not working as it should. You may hear both terms used interchangeably, but TMD is the diagnosis and TMJ is the structure involved.

When this joint or the surrounding muscles become overloaded, inflamed or unbalanced, it can lead to ongoing discomfort, restricted movement and pain.

5 Common Causes of TMJ Disorder

From my experience as a TMJ dentist in London, the most common causes include:

  1. Bruxism teeth grinding and clenching
Many patients are unaware they grind or clench, particularly at night. Bruxism and TMJ are closely linked and place significant strain on the jaw joint and muscles.
  2. Bite changes or dental imbalance
Tooth wear, orthodontic movement or dental restorations can subtly alter how your teeth meet, affecting how your jaw functions.
  3. Stress and emotional tension
Stress often shows up physically in the jaw muscles, leading to tightness, fatigue and pain.
  4. Trauma or jaw overuse such as chewing gum, accidents, dental procedures or prolonged mouth opening can trigger TMJ symptoms.
  5. Certain health conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, hormonal imbalances or sleep apnoea

5 Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

Patients seeking jaw pain treatment commonly experience:

  1. Jaw pain or facial muscle tenderness
  2. Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
  3. Headaches or temple pain
  4. Difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully
  5. Ear pain or pressure without infection

If this sounds familiar, TMJ disorder treatment may help relieve your symptoms and prevent progression.

Holistic TMJ Treatment Options in London

At our TMJ clinic in London, I take a conservative and holistic approach, combining modern diagnostics with therapies that support your body’s natural ability to heal.

Below is an overview of the TMD treatment options we offer:

Acupuncture Therapy
Acupuncture helps reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and calm the nervous system. It is particularly effective for TMJ pain linked to stress, clenching and muscular imbalance.

Jaw Joint Exercise Therapy
Gentle, guided exercises improve jaw coordination, mobility and muscle balance, supporting long term joint health.

Mouth Guard Therapy
Custom made mouth guards protect your teeth, reduce clenching forces and allow overworked jaw muscles to relax, especially helpful if bruxism is present.

Lifestyle Therapy
Simple changes can have a powerful impact. This includes posture guidance, habit awareness, dietary advice and stress management strategies.

T Scan Assessment for Bite Changes
A digital T Scan allows me to assess how your teeth come together in real time, helping identify bite imbalances that may be contributing to jaw joint disorder and ongoing discomfort.
