Sedation

Feel at ease during your dental treatment

If you’re feeling nervous or worried about visiting the dentist, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety is common, and can stop you from accessing vital dental treatment. Whatever your reason for avoiding the dentist, we understand and we’re here to help. At Covent Garden Dental Spa, we believe that dental treatment should be delivered in a calm and relaxed way, with judgement-free care and specialised safe sedation.

How does sedation work?

For patients who experience dental anxiety or wish to feel more relaxed during their dental treatment, we offer two effective sedation options. Oral sedation involves taking a Diazepam tablet, for which you will receive a prescription and incur only the standard prescription cost. This method helps to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

Alternatively, we provide IV sedation, administered intravenously through a soft plastic tube. This option offers a deeper level of relaxation and is priced at £350 per hour. For your safety and comfort, we work with an experienced external anaesthetist who comes to our practice to administer the IV sedation, ensuring you are in the most capable hands. Importantly, you’ll likely have little to no memory of the procedure. Sedation is particularly helpful for complex treatments like wisdom teeth removal or root canal treatments.

What does dental sedation involve?

If you are interested in sedation, or we have suggested it may help you, we begin with a consultation. We discuss the procedure in as much or as little detail as you are happy and comfortable with, and assess your overall health. This ensures we can tailor the level of sedation to your individual needs.

The effects of sedation will take a while to wear off, so you will need someone to take you home and keep an eye on you after your treatment.  This ensures your safety and allows you to recover comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

Is sedation safe?

Yes, sedation is very safe when carried out by our qualified and experienced professional clinicians. We explain the entire process beforehand and answer any questions you may have. With conscious sedation, you remain awake throughout, so you avoid the risks associated with general anaesthetic.

Can I ask for sedation?

Yes! If you think sedation would make your dental visit more comfortable, please let your dentist know. We want you to feel relaxed and at ease. We’ll discuss if sedation is right for you and explore other options that might help.

How do I get ready for sedation?

Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment and take your usual medications. Also, arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you after your treatment, as the sedation effects will linger.

Can I still talk if I have sedation?

You will still be able to talk if you have intravenous sedation. You remain conscious and able to communicate, but it is likely you will not remember any of these conversations once the effects of the sedation have worn off.
